The other two crew members, the pilot and the co-pilot, managed to escape the accident alive.
A helicopter from the Spanish Customs Surveillance Service fell into the sea at dawn this Sunday when it was chasing suspected drug traffickers in the Sotogrande area, reports the Cádiz Delegation of the Unified Association of Civil Guards. After the accident, one of the three crew members of the ship, the mechanic, died, while his two companions, the pilot and the co-pilot, escaped alive.
The aircraft was pursuing a narcolancha, when it fell for reasons that are still unknown. Although the life jackets were activated, the victim was trapped inside the helicopter that sank at high speed without being able to be rescued by the Civil Guard that was behind, says El Confidencial.
The President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, deeply regretted the death of the Customs official and expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased through his Twitter account.
My affection to the family of the Customs Surveillance operator who died when the helicopter with which they were carrying out an operation in the San Roque area crashed into the sea. Thanks to all the troops and FCS that you watch every day for our security, against crime. https://t.co/1UV0sMxBnZ
