The filmmaker James Gunn has been able to see first-hand what it is like to work in the studies of both houses, Marvel and DC. He worked on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the impending “Suicide Squad.” Given that experience, they have asked him about his experience, and what is good about one or the other.
Suicide Squad writer and director James Gunn doesn’t think it’s strange that DC’s Extended Universe can encompass R-rated movies in addition to family-oriented movies like “Shazam!” What’s more, he thinks that gives the DCEU an edge over the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I think it’s great. It’s one of the ways DC can distinguish itself from Marvel. What I do [con los Guardianes de la Galaxia] it’s very different from what it does [el director de ‘Ant-Man’] Peyton Reed, it’s so different than what he did [el director de ‘Iron Man’ Jon] Favreau, is different from Taika [Waititi, el director de ‘Thor: Ragnarok’].
But not as different as ‘Shazam!’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ though. I think the current batch of people at Warner Bros. are really interested in building a world and creating something that is unique to filmmakers. We are in a strange time, so anything can happen.
We know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe largely reflects the creative vision of Marvel Studios President and Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige, who has overseen this universe from the beginning. Although Gunn acknowledged Feige’s practical role in running the MCU, he also said that Marvel and DC’s approaches to their film franchises are not as different as most people assume.
There’s no question that Kevin Feige is much more involved in editing than the folks at Warner Bros. He gives more scoring. You don’t have to follow her and I don’t always follow them. On the other hand, he had more problems. If you’ve seen the first cut of ‘Guardians’ 1, I had more problems, because it was the first time I did something so gigantic and you have to learn what works and what doesn’t, removing what is left over. The truth is, as Marvel progresses and Kevin Feige begins to accumulate ownership of half the movies overall, it is more spread out.
After being fired and rehired by Marvel Studios when his old offensive tweets resurfaced, Gunn will return to the MCU to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He will also continue to collaborate with Warner Bros. and DC on the HBO Max series “Peacemaker,” a spinoff. from the movie “The Suicide Squad” centered on the character of John Cena, a supervillain determined to achieve peace, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.
