Thousands defend the Cuban government

HAVANA.

Thousands of Cubans responded yesterday to the summons of authorities to denounce the United States trade embargo and reaffirm their support for the revolution, days after the largest protests against the government in the country.

In the presence of former president Raúl Castro and the current president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, some 100,000 people — according to the organizers — waved flags and chanted government slogans and against the US embargo.

It is not on a whim that we are meeting here this morning in the midst of a complex epidemiological situation. We have summoned them to denounce once again the blockade, aggression and terror. The enemy (the United States) has once again launched itself with everything to destroy the sacred unity and the tranquility of the citizen, ”Díaz-Canel said in his speech.

Last week, thousands of other Cubans took to the streets in an unusual protest over the shortage of basic products, medicines, restrictions on civil liberties and against the socialist system in the midst of the worst moment of the coronavirus pandemic. A new day of anti-government mobilizations is expected today.

Down with the Yankees! ”,“ We were born to win and not to be defeated! ”Shouted the crowd, gathered on the Malecón in Havana.

The mobilization was carried out at the worst moment of the covid-19 pandemic for Cuba. The island accumulates 275,608 cases and 1,843 deaths. Yesterday there were more than six thousand infections and 52 deaths.
