Joe Biden has ensured that Facebook and other platforms focused on social networks are “killing people” by allowing misinformation about COVID-19 to spread on their platforms.

Biden’s comments came in response to a reporter who asked the president what his message was to “platforms like Facebook” regarding the misinformation about COVID-19. “They are killing people,” Biden said. “I mean they’re really … you see, the only pandemic we have right now is among the unvaccinated. And they’re killing people.”

His comments, a day after the American “Fernando Simón” issued an unusual health advisory about the dangers of misinformation about vaccines, comes amid growing pressure for Facebook and other platforms to do more to address misinformation about coronavirus vaccines. But Facebook has come under particular scrutiny because of its size and spotty track record in countering vaccine falsehoods. Social networks have responded that they are taking real efforts to stop these measures, but at the same time they must combine it with a proactive respect for the freedom of expression of their users.
