Study reveals whether Black Widow had greater or equal impact on female audiences

Marvel Studios just returned to the big screen with Black Widow – 87%, starring Scarlett Johansson, and despite the fact that the film still generates a certain feeling of belonging to the previous phase due to the fact that the story takes place between Captain America: Civil War –

90% and Avengers: Infinity War – 79%, it has officially been the beginning of Phase 4 in the cinema, without forgetting the three series of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that premiered this year.

The film directed by Cate Shortland is the second installment of the MCU, of 24 in total, that is carried out exclusively by a heroine; The first was Captain Marvel – 60% in 2019. It is true that this Cinematic Universe has had an important female presence in all its films, but most of the time the heroines accompanied male characters as in Guardians of the Galaxy – 91%, Thor: Ragnarok – 92% or Ant-Man and the Wasp – 85%.

In the midst of this, various assumptions have emerged about the impact generated by the films starring heroines compared to all the others, and although anyone might think that the interest is higher, some studies have revealed that the result is quite even taking into account other universes outside of Marvel. CinemaBlend has shared a reception study based on what it has generated Black widow in its opening week.

In this analysis it was revealed that 58% of ticket purchases for the film have been made by men, this only on its opening weekend, which would result in a division close to 60/40 according to the gender of the audience . Although it seems that the number of women in the audience is considerably good, the truth is that it is not so different from the results of other films that have even obtained a greater reception from a female audience.

It is worth mentioning that the film is being shown simultaneously in the Disney Plus Premier Access, that is, that throughout its passage through the billboard as well as its stay on the platform it could have an important evolution. Wonder Woman – 92%, which premiered in 2017, had 58% female viewers, which would be fairly equal to the male audience.

Captain Marvel, for its part, it would obtain 55% male viewers and 45% female viewers. What stands out in these reports is that, although the films do not have a greater reception in terms of women, at least they do achieve that they have a little more balance between genders unlike the others in which men dominate so much in the film as in theaters. From 2012 to 2015, the general audience for this type of film had a 60/40 impact in favor of the male audience.

So far, one of the few films that showed greater parity among audiences was Grandes Héroes – 89%, the Disney animated film, with a 50/50 score. It should be noted that the film that marked a much larger division with the most male audiences was Dredd – 78%, resulting in a 75/25 reception. Finally though Black widow it has not gotten a higher amount of women in the showrooms, it did get it at least on the screen with Johansson, Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz at the forefront without forgetting Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov and all the Black Widows.
