The second aquaman movie started filming a few weeks ago. What’s more, just a few days ago, actor Jason Momoa announced his move to the UK to join the film’s production team. They have not yet released official details of the film, but the director James Wan advances that it is possibly the last one he does with the character.
The filmmaker is not much to do sequels. He has always said that he flees from the sequels, although on rare occasions he has, such as with “Insidious: Chapter 2” and with “The Warren File: The Enfield Case”, that is why it was so surprising that his return was announced for Aquaman 2, titled officially “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”.
In a promotional interview about “Malignant”, the director spoke about his return to the DC universe after directing the first film, as well as being involved as a producer on the animated miniseries “Aquaman: King of Atlantis.” As he relates in this interview that has taken place while he is in the production of the Aquaman film, it is rare that he gets to make three films of a franchise.
There’s a reason I don’t make three movies in the same series. It would be lucky if it made a sequel. And after that, I get bored. I want to do something different.
The filmmaker only makes sequels when there is a new hook in the story that interests him or some new aspect of the characters he loves that he thinks is worth exploring. Otherwise, you are not interested in repeating yourself. In Aquaman’s case, what encouraged him to return was to tell a new story that he describes as “worthy”.
I would say that what really got me going back to it is finding a story that I think it’s worthy and if not better than the first movie Wan says of the second Aquaman movie. And also, for me, really, when I go back to a sequel,
In both Insidious 2 and The Conjuring 2, and now in Aquaman 2, I helped shape and create these characters that I ended up falling in love with, and I feel like I’m not done with them yet. So I feel like I owe you [a Aquaman] another story.
Without going into much detail, Wan comments that I really wanted to come back to “continue the next chapter in the story of Arthur Curry, and the story of Orm, and the story of Mera, and the story of Black Manta.”. In his words, he also credits screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick for “finding a really cool story to bring all these characters back, and then grow them big, and take them to the next level or the next chapter of their stories. lives ”.
Beyond the characters, we know that there is another element that Wan is passionate about about Aquaman, the build of the underwater world.
The first film introduced audiences to a world so big that it only scratched the surface. And I feel like now I can dig into that and expand it further. When I feel like I have nothing more to say, that’s when I back down. But right now that’s not the case with ‘the Lost Kingdom’.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” will be released in theaters on December 16, 2022.
