Alejandro Valverde competing in Tokyo in his fifth Olympic Games. The Murcian, who holds one of the best palmars in the history of cycling, sees the Olympic medal as his last great sporting motivation. In this new chapter of “Olympic Dreams” recorded last 2020, the world champion in 2018 analyzes what the Olympic event means to him.
Many times you have said that you prefer to win the Olympic Games to the Tour de France, do you still have that feeling?
It is clear that the Tour is the most important race there is, but in an Olympic Games at the end you are representing your country and a victory there will remain there forever, so maybe I will stay with the Olympic Games.
Of your four previous entries, in which year do you think you could have been closer to the medals?
The Olympics is a very complicated race, because there are only 5 riders per team. The year that I was very good was the one that Samuel Sánchez won, but because of how the race developed I couldn’t be there, but for me Samuel’s gold is as if I had won because in the end the victory was for the National Team.
How is that special atmosphere that exists in the Olympic Village?
The Olympic Games are also very beautiful because of the atmosphere of the village. You meet the best athletes in each discipline and it is a pride to see you there.
What feelings do you have regarding the route of the Olympic Games?
The tour is very good for me. Momparler was recognizing it and told me that it suited me perfectly, besides the heat can also be good for me, although the humidity that will be there maybe not so much. I think it is a route with which we can be ahead.
Can the Olympics be the last great motivation of your career?
The Games may be my last motivation, yes.
What would be the ideal race that would have to take place so that we can live a day like the one at the Innsbruck World Cup?
The ideal race will be a bit like the World Cup. In the World Cup, all the circumstances were in favor, I found myself very well, the teammates had a spectacular day and if those circumstances were repeated it would be the maximum that I could ask for.
Winning with the National Team is always something very special, right?
Winning with the colors of the National Team is very special. It is something that remains there forever.
