Recently Spider-Man has been on everyone’s lips due to the launch of the trailer for Spider-Man: No Road Home, the third Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to rumors (which the trailer only reinforces), the film will bring back Tobey Maguire (The Master Play – 72%, The Great Gatsby – 48%, Crazy Weekend – 25%) and Andrew Garfield (Until Last Man – 86%, Social Network – 96%, A Reason To Live – 67%) to their roles as Spider-Man, and for the first time in history we will see the three live-action actors of the superhero on screen and incarnating the same character.

The first Spider-Man movie – 89% starring Maguire came in 2002, and 10 years later we had the second version with Garfield in the reboot The Amazing Spider-Man – 73%. In 2016 the character became part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home – 82%, Avengers: Infinity War – 79%, The Impossible – 81%) was chosen to bring the superhero to life, and since then there has been a debate among fans about which is the best adaptation. We have already covered the subject in other articles, but now we will talk about popularity.
A survey carried out by Culture Crave, in which 30,585 users participated, resulted in Holland being the most popular Spider-Man, with 43.4% of votes, followed by Maguire with 38.5% and Garfield with 18.1%. These results coincide with other surveys conducted by entertainment sites in previous years such as Cosmic Book News and IGN. You can see the results here:

However, while fans of the British actor might nod their heads and think they are on the right side of the story, there are good reasons to suspect that the poll does not reflect reality. On the one hand, Internet polls are not very reliable, and there are groups on social networks that organize to give votes to their favorite characters in each poll that appears, and it is logical that many of Holland’s fans are younger, so most of the Maguire and Garfield fans may not have been there to cast their vote.
On the other hand, if box office results were an effective way to measure popularity, the first Spider Man sold far more tickets in 2002 than any of the films starring Holland, and its gross at the local box office (United States and Canada), even without adjusting for inflation, is higher than that of any Spider-Man installment in the Cinematic Universe from Marvel.
Finally, we cannot ignore the fact that the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home overwhelmingly beat the Avengers: Endgame trailer records – 95% in their first 24 hours, not by seeing Holland and Zendaya again, but by the appearance of Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2 – 93%, Frida – 76%, Beautiful Revenge – 90%), villain of Spider man 2, and the laugh of Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ – 82%, Born July 4 – 90%, Antichrist – 70%), villain of Spider Man. In the Twitter and Google trends the most mentioned terms were Tobey Maguire, Alfred Molina, Willem dafoe, but no Tom hollandSo the results of the Culture Crave poll seem to reflect only the opinion of a section of the audience that cannot be taken as the opinion of the majority.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17, and before that, Marvel fans will be able to enjoy Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings – 95%, which hits theaters these days; and Eternals, whose premiere is scheduled for November 5.
