When it comes to superhero movies, something that is not usually called is complex. Some like Joker – 91% and Logan – 93% are in various ways, but that is rarely the rule. In general, they are rather a visual spectacle together with a playful handling of the topics that usually configure this type of stories.

That said, James Wan just promised that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is going to be a much more complex film than the first. Not that the first one is a particularly complex movie or anything. That was said during a virtual question and answer session (via .). The subject of questions in general is his new horror movie, Malignant. Speaking of her, she said that she knows that audiences are smart and that is why it is better to make works that play with their expectations than to present linear and predictable stories. First he was talking about that tape, but then he made it clear that this is also the case with the new movie about the water hero. Here are his exact words:
That is a good question. For me, everything is really about telling the particular story that I am telling on that particular tape; the story and the characters. In Malignant’s case, it’s a very windy story. Obviously a lot of it is just me keeping the cards in my hands and trying not to show them and just finding the degrees of how much we are going to show and how much we are going to hide. And that is difficult because today’s audiences are very intelligent, they are very sagacious; they see the trailers, they see the posters, and they can solve the puzzles. So the key here is’ how do I stay one step ahead of the public that is so smart these days, and at the same time have things happen that people haven’t seen yet? For me, one of the things I like to do is start with a structure of the story that is somewhat familiar, so I have a strong foundation to work with. People can go see a movie like Malignant and think, ‘Ok, I can follow this because a) it’s a murder mystery and also a detective thriller and we’ve seen a lot of those already; we in a way understand its structure. ‘ But within that, is when we start to screw things up. I take that away from them and start taking them on a labyrinthine journey. It’s that aspect that makes it fun for me. And not only in horror films, I even try to do in Fast & Furious 7 and, to some extent, in the first Aquaman, but I definitely do a lot more in Aquaman 2. There are more complexities in Aquaman 2 than there were. on the first tape. And so these are things that I have learned along the way and that is what I find so intriguing as a filmmaker. I try to take everything I have learned from each of my tapes and carry it on to my next project.

Something that may help make it more complex is that Jason Momoa himself helped write it. This was revealed in an interview with Drew Barrymore. It must be remembered that the actor is also a director and writer and Road to Paloma is proof of it. Here his words:
After we finished the first one, I went with my writing partner and we created the second one and then we went and presented the idea and what I can say most is that I love it so much that I participated in writing it. So we did the first draft and then James and our original screenwriter David finished it. The hearts of all of us are in it. Instead of just getting a script and doing it, I am 100% motivated by the director and co-writers. That is very exciting for me and I am looking forward to doing it. I’m leaving in July and we start shooting.
