When a movie or television series is as hugely successful as that of The Money Heist (Álex Pina, since 2017) around the world thanks to Netflix, which even the novelist Stephen King was hooked on, it seems logical to imagine continuations or spin-off. Not surprisingly, there are film analysts who complain that this is the sign of these cinematic times. And, in fact, conversations are not lacking on the matter for this Spanish fiction.
When they released the fourth season, in April 2020, the Alex Pina (Red Sky) Arlanna Davis answered in a very timely interview for Oprah Daily that the possibility was true. “I think that’s thanks to the strong and powerful identities of the characters. We have always looked for characters with a very complex layered design, ”he said. “That is why I believe that almost all characters from La casa de papel have a duality that we would like to see in a spin-off. We could see any of them in other contexts ”.
The conditions for the ‘spin-off’ of ‘La casa de papel’
But, fortunately, Álex Pina wanted to be more specific about what he was thinking: “I think Arturito [Enrique Arce] could have a black comedy. In case of Berlin [Pedro Alonso] for his own program it is very clear; he is misogynistic, psychopathic, self-centered, narcissistic, delinquent, rapist … but there are still many people who adore him because he values friendship, loyalty or brotherhood. From Nairobi [Alba Flores] until andl Teacher [Álvaro Morte]… Denver [Jaime Lorente] he is one more character with his own charm. I would love to write you all a spin-off! “
However, the director and executive producer Jesus Colmenar (The pier) assured last June in a virtual meeting with the press the following: “Would we do a spin-off from teacher? Maybe, but it is already in La casa de papel. I mean that his story, his reasons, his whys … are already told in La casa de papel. The spin-offs of a very minor character who attracts a lot of attention work, and you can create a new series based on his story. “
To which Álex Pina added: “When you do a spin-off, it has to be about a totally different universe, and you have to focus elsewhere. On the one hand, you could make a spin-off of all the characters in La casa de papel because they all have enough for a series, but at the same time I think La casa de papel already tells their stories. ” And Jesús Colmenar finished his clarifications with these words: “So, the answer is yes [a un posible spin-off del Profesor], but it depends”.
On a possible Tokyo-centric series
Finally, the journalist Custodio Guerrero recently asked on behalf of SensaCine to Ursula Corberó (Snatch), who plays Tokyo in Paper House, if his character could star in a spin-off. “I had already thought about it, really. And it can be ”, said the actress. “When I read the scripts and saw that that thing was recovered from why Tokyo had ended the way it had ended, I found it very interesting too. Because, as there is so much hatred towards this character on the part of the audience, it seemed very interesting to me that they gave the character the opportunity to explain and understand the reason for all this ”.
The suggestion comes up because of the news about Úrsula Corberó’s anti-heroine in the unpredictable fifth season of La casa de papel, and the option of pulling that thread after the unexpected circumstances she faces in it. “I think it’s a very beautiful story and the flashbacks they always give a lot of freshness to the series, and I think it is also very necessary in this last season where everything is darker than ever ”. We assume, in any case, that their ballots for a spin-off are the same as the most attractive characters in the Netflix series.
