Dune – 80% is hitting theaters very soon and fans of the original novel are eager to see the latest adaptation of the most famous science fiction story. Things have not been easy for Dune– Continual delays and a chaotic simultaneous launch decision in streaming that even made Denis Villeneuve tremble. But this last alternative could be the salvation of the hypothetical film saga. New information indicates that the aftermath of Dune maybe it will only come true if the first part is successful on HBO Max.

The last few weeks have been exciting for fans of Dune– Festival premieres, red carpets, new trailers and clips, and exclusive interviews with the stars and the director. The big release is being announced by Warner Bros. with great fanfare, as well as multiple invitations to the public to see the film on the big screen, something Denis Villeneuve always dreamed of. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic does not leave many options for the monstrous success of the title, because as we have noticed at the box offices of the other 2021 premieres, the millions do not flow as they did before 2020.
According to Variety (via Culture Crave), Warner Bros. would be considering making a second part of Dune only if the first is successful on the HBO Max platform. We know that this sequel would not be El Mesías de Dune, the second novel in the literary saga, but Dune: Part 2; Let’s remember that the 2021 adaptation only covers the first half of the first book, as it is a complicated material to bring to the big screen and that requires meticulous but solid efforts to successfully transfer the essence.

Dune has a duration of two hours and 35 minutes, quite a long time but that does not surprise us in the work of Villeneuve. Culture Crave also reports that Warner allegedly informed Denis of the priority given to the numbers of HBO Max, a situation that since 2020 has bothered the reckless filmmaker. At the end of last year, the French-Canadian director published a letter in which he spoke about his disdain for the simultaneous release.
Here there is absolutely no love for the cinema, nor for the public. It is about the survival of a telecommunications mammoth, which currently has an astronomical debt of more than 150 billion dollars. So while Dune is about movies and audiences, AT&T is about its own survival on Wall Street. With the launch of HBO Max a flop thus far, AT&T decided to sacrifice the entire Warner Bros. roster for 2021 in a desperate attempt to grab an audience’s attention.
But fans of Dune they have reason enough to fear the failure of the film. The low box office that even the most anticipated films of 2021 have achieved is not generating confidence. Black Widow – 87%, Jungle Cruise – 70% and The Suicide Squad – 91% are clear examples of supremacy during its first weekend on the billboard, but of a thunderous fiasco in the second. They all lost their place at the box office and the millions are not enough to inspire confidence. If films like these, with a larger demographic reach, did not have the ability to dominate the billboard for several weeks, what are you waiting for? Dune?
According to the official information, Dune opens in theaters on October 22. Will its impact be enough to make it possible Dune: Part 2, or even The Messiah of Dune, Sons of Dune or God Emperor of Dune?
