For several years now, streaming platforms have become one of the most beloved entertainment media of the people, and their popularity causes the most traditionalist film directors to explode with anger when they feel that theaters are losing ground to Netflix. and similar services. The most notorious and controversial case of this year was that of HBO Max, a platform that in 2021 will premiere all Warner Bros. movies in streaming and cinemas at the same time, at least in the United States.

The strategy was heavily criticized from the start, especially by Christopher Nolan, who said that HBO Max was the worst streaming service. The controversial declaration also meant the breakdown of a relationship of several years of alliance, since his new film will no longer be produced by Warner Bros., but by Universal. However, Nolan is not alone. David Chase, creator of The Sopranos, who served as producer and writer on the new film The Many Saints of Newark, is beyond furious about the situation.
The Many Saints of Newark is a prequel to The Sopranos which will tell the story of Tony Soprano, the protagonist of the series. Its cast includes Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michael Gandolfini and Ray Liotta, among others. Its premiere is scheduled for this September 24, but it is no longer a reason for joy for Chase, because in an interview with Deadline he confessed (via IndieWire):
Frankly, I don’t think I would have taken the job if I had known it was going to be a simultaneous release. I think it’s horrible.

When asked about how he felt about learning about Warner Bros’ strategy, he said:
Extremely angry, and I still am […] If one of those executives was sitting here and I started getting mad and complaining, they’d say, you know, there are 17 other movies that have the same problem. What could we do? COVID-19! Well I know, but those other 16 movies didn’t start out as a TV show. They don’t have to get rid of that television image before people go to the movies. But we do. And that’s where we are, people should go see it in a movie theater. It was designed to be a movie. It was … it’s beautiful like a movie. I never thought I’d be on HBO again. Never.
The supposed war between filmmakers and streaming does not seem to be close to ending, but sooner or later many of them will have to resign themselves to the fact that independent films could have a better future in streaming than on the big screen. In turn, this opens up a world of opportunities for artists who will not need to be subjected to the numbers at the box office.
Some of the movies that were affected by HBO Max’s strategy were Wonder Woman 1984 – 76% and The Suicide Squad – 91%. The big surprise was Godzilla vs. Kong – 85%, which was a hit at the box office.

The Sopranos it was released in 1999 and had 6 seasons; It was about New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, as well as some characters close to him. The series was a ratings success and critics praised it; it won more than twenty Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes. The entire six seasons can be enjoyed on HBO Max.
Prequels aren’t always very lucky. Like late sequels and reboots, they can be huge disappointments. we hope that The Many Saints of Newark live up to the HBO series that left its mark on an entire generation and that marked a before and after in television history.
