German Hesse state finance minister Thomas Schäfer was found dead on a high-speed train line between the cities of Frankfurt and Mainz in what appears to be suicide, police reported.
The German politician left a letter explaining the reasons why he took his life, authorities said, although the content of the letter was not disclosed, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper published.
Schäfer’s body was located on Saturday morning, but was not recognized until a few hours later, the report added.
His role, especially in recent times, was to attend to the financial problems caused by the coronavirus crisis and its impact on the population in the future, which some suspect was the reason for his decision, Deutsche Welle reported.
He saw no way out, Volker Bouffier, head of state government, explained in a first reaction.
The fact was announced through a video conference by the authorities, in an unexpected event for the community of the federal state of Hesse.
