New York —

The ‘South American giant’ recorded a record 1,262 new deaths from COVID-19 in one day, bringing the total number of victims to 31,199

The Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, affirmed this Tuesday that death “is the fate of everyone” when questioned about the message he would send to the families of the victims by the COVID-19 in Brazil, on the day the country registered a record of deaths from the pandemic.

“I regret all the dead, but it is the fate of the whole world,” said the far-right leader in statements he gave in front of the Alvorada Palace, the official residence of the Brazilian Presidency in Brasilia, before a group of followers.

The head of state thus responded to a supporter who, mentioning passages from the Bible, asked Bolsonaro to give “a word of comfort at this time” to the families of the victims.

The statement coincided with the release of the new Ministry of Health bulletin on the pandemic, according to which Brazil registered a record 1,262 new deaths from COVID-19 in a single day on Tuesday, bringing the total number of victims to 31,199. .

The death toll on Tuesday, higher than the 1,188 recorded on May 21, which was the most fatal day so far, confirms Brazil as the fourth country in the number of victims in the world and includes it among those who already have more of 30,000 together with the United States, United Kingdom and Italy.

According to the Ministry’s bulletin, in the last 24 hours 28,936 new cases were registered, bringing the number of those infected to 555,383, confirming Brazil as the second country with the most cases in the world after the United States and the epicenter of the pandemic in Latin America.

The high numbers of cases and deaths occur at a time when several regional and municipal governments of Brazil are beginning to implement gradual processes of de-escalation of measures of economic paralysis and to make the guidelines for social distancing more flexible.

They also occur when Brazil completes 18 days without a Minister of Health since the previous two came out due to their disagreements with Bolsonaro on the strategy before the pandemic.

The far-right leader is one of the most skeptical rulers about the severity of the pandemic, he came to describe COVID-19 as a “flu” and since the beginning of the crisis he defends the end of the distancing measures imposed by regional governments and standardization of all activities.

For the head of state, more than half of the Brazilian population will contract the disease independent of the isolation measures that are adopted, so his priority is to avoid the already planned historical recession that, in his opinion, will generate hunger and poverty and will cause a higher number of deaths.

In his conversation with followers on Tuesday, Bolsonaro again defended the use of chloroquine to treat patients with COVID-19 despite the fact that the efficacy of this medicine against coronavirus is not proven since the World Health Organization itself ( WHO) recommended the suspension of experiments worldwide with this antimalarial product.

Despite contrary recommendations in which doctors warned about the adverse effects of this medicine, such as the possibility of causing cardiac arrhythmia, Brazil, at Bolsonaro’s request, authorized the use of chloroquine to treat all patients with COVID-19, even those who are not in serious condition.

“People who demand chloroquine at least give us an alternative. We know it may not be all that some people think, but it is what we have for now. There are many stories of favorable patients and doctors, “said Bolsonaro.
