This year there will be no list of the best restaurants in the world, since The World’s 50 Best Restaurants announced on Monday that they decide to jump 2020 and dedicate themselves to helping the sector, one of the most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic due to closings. , mandatory or voluntary, depending on the country.

This year’s gala had been scheduled in Antwerp (Flanders) on June 2 with the presence of the best chefs in the world, but it is suspended until 2021 “if circumstances allow it,” the organization said in a statement, which also specifies that in 2020 it will not make its annual ranking due to the situation that restaurants are going through.

It is suspended until next year, when it is expected that “they are underway in a process of reconstruction and recovery.”

William Drew, director of content for The World’s 50 Best, points out that in the face of the spread of the coronavirus, this year they will dedicate all their efforts “to helping restaurants fight for their future and the work chefs and restaurateurs are doing to helping others “, as many of them have mobilized around the world to feed health personnel and those most in need.

Solidarity work in favor of their communities that thank them and for which they promise to be an amplifier through their social networks.

The World’s 50 Best “will design and develop impactful initiatives that will help the world to work together in this time of need,” in addition to supporting global hospitality workers.

Promoted by the British magazine Restaurant, this ranking has been presented in London during most of its editions and then it has traveled around New York, Melburne (Australia), Bilbao and Singapore, where the 2019 one was released on June 25, with Mirazur, by the Argentine Mauro Colagreco in Menton (France), as number one.

From that date a new system came into force whereby the establishments that have occupied the number 1 do not repeat and become part of the “best of the best” category.

Among them are the Spanish El Celler de Can Roca (Girona), the American The French Laundry, the British The Fat Duck and the Italian Osteria Francescana.
